Each phone brand uses a different version. Google added two more options to these. Android Go and Android One are new options targeting different types of users and phone hardware. is an enhanced and heavily optimized version. It is aimed at emerging markets and users who have not yet owned a smartphone.
The official name of the first version is Android Oreo (Go edition). Although it is based on Android 8.1 and has a similar look and feature set, Google created it to address three specific situations its users face:
- Slow, unreliable or poor data connection.
- Cheaper, less capable hardware in established markets.
- Limited opportunities to recharge the battery.
Low Features, Low Price
Android Go works on low-end devices. It includes between 512MB and 1GB of RAM and up to 8GB of internal storage. Go Edition occupies half of the full capabilities of Android Oreo. Google says it expects most Go phones to be under $100. Some can be even less than $50.
Smartphones don’t exist without apps, of course, Google has created Go-optimized versions of most of the key apps. Gmail, YouTube, Google Assistant, Maps and Gboard are among their offerings and are 50% smaller than the originals. There are also several new apps, including the fast file manager Files Go. WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram are among those already available.
For those using regular Android versions, Go will be very slow and inefficient in practice. However, the possibility of having a phone at the most affordable price will help Android reach even more goals in the world.
Apparently, with Android Go, Google is targeting people and countries who can’t afford to buy existing smartphones.
What is Android One?
Android One is Google’s software that allows phone manufacturers to release phones running Stock Android (Pure Android), the untouched pure version of Android provided by Google without any modifications. It is a managed program. The program is a partnership between Google and phone manufacturers. Phones that are currently running Pure Android are not automatically Android One phones.
The phone manufacturer must accept some important conditions in order to participate in the program:
- All phones must have the Android One logo printed on the back.
- The manufacturer must agree to provide regular OS and security updates.
- The number and type of pre-installable apps will be strictly controlled.
