World Heritage in Danger Revived with Animations

World heritage sites are in constant danger of degradation and destruction. Due to reasons such as natural disasters, wars, climate change and urbanization, these areas frequently face dangers and risk disappearing from the world.. These endangered world heritage sites are considered to belong to all humanity wherever they are, but not all people get the chance to see them.. The Budget Direct team has taken action to change that.. World heritage sites in danger have been restored and animated online by the team.

Architects; Jelena Popovic worked with Keremcan Kırılmaz and industrial designer Erdem Batırbek to provide the best online experience. Selecting six of the world heritage sites, the team explored the best of these places and created a series of animations from how they all look now to how they were when they first appeared..

The aim of the project, apart from creating an experience similar to the virtual museum experience, is to encourage the participation of local people in the protection of cultural and natural heritage, and also to accelerate the creation of management plans for the protection of world heritage sites by states.

World Heritage in Danger: Animations Made

Old City (Jerusalem)

Jerusalem is home to many culturally significant structures built over hundreds of years.. City; It is one of the most important cities in the world as it operates as a holy city for Judaism, Christianity and Islam.. Dubbed the heart of Jerusalem, the Old City is endangered by rapid urbanization after heavy destruction.

The city, which was added to the World Heritage List in 1981, hosts 220 historical monuments.. In 1982, Jerusalem was added to the World Heritage List.

Leptis Magna (Libya)

Leptis Magna was said to be one of the most beautiful cities of the Roman Empire.. Among the precious stones of the ancient city in present-day Libya is the theater that opens on a low hill that was used as a cemetery before.

Libya’s civil war has made the city of Leptis Magna vulnerable to war damage and looting.. The city, which was added to the World Heritage List in 1982, was included in the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2016.

Portobelo – San Lorenzo (Panama)

Portobelo-San Lorenzo castles protect intercontinental trade It was one of the stunning works built for. External factors threatened the heritage site from the coast, while the dangers of urbanization on the land and maintenance problems endangered the castles from the inside.. That’s why the Portobelo-San Lorenzo foundations were added to UNESCO’s endangered list in 2012.

Palmyra (Syria)

Palmrya has become a symbol of endangered world heritage sites. At the height of the war in Syria, it was part of the post-war wall of the Bel Temple destroyed by militants and the main entrance to the temple.. Today, efforts are being made to protect this ancient city.

Hatra (Iraq)

Until recently, Hatra was one of the best preserved ancient cities.. Castle, 3 BC. – 2. It was built between the century. The ancient city was added to the World Heritage List in 1985.. In 2015, the site was added to the List of World Heritage in Danger by UNESCO after conflicts in the area destroyed most of the statues and artifacts.
